What is a GST invoice?
A GST invoice, or tax invoice, is the bill a GST-registered business issues when it supplies taxable goods or services. It lets the buyer claim input tax credit and gives the seller a record of the tax collected. It differs from a plain bill because it must show GST-specific details such as GSTIN, HSN/SAC code, place of supply and the tax split.
Details a GST tax invoice should contain
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, 2017 lists the particulars of a tax invoice. The main ones are below, and all of them appear on invoices made with Hostspica Bills:
- Supplier name, address and GSTIN
- A unique, sequential invoice number and the invoice date
- Recipient name, address and GSTIN (when registered)
- Description of goods or services with HSN or SAC code
- Quantity, unit and total value of each item
- Taxable value after discount
- GST rate and amount of CGST, SGST or IGST
- Place of supply, for inter-state supplies the name of the state
- Signature of the supplier or authorized signatory
Requirements can differ by turnover and type of supply, so use this list as a guide and check specifics with your chartered accountant.
CGST + SGST or IGST: which one applies?
| Supply | Tax charged | Example at 18% GST |
|---|---|---|
| Seller and place of supply in the same state | CGST + SGST (or UTGST) | 9% CGST + 9% SGST |
| Seller and place of supply in different states | IGST | 18% IGST |
Hostspica Bills compares your company state with the place of supply on each invoice and applies the right split. You can override the place of supply when the rules call for it.

Frequently asked questions
What is a GST invoice?
+
A GST invoice, also called a tax invoice, is the document a GST-registered seller issues for a taxable supply of goods or services. It records the seller and buyer, the items, the taxable value and the GST charged as CGST, SGST or IGST.
Is an invoice number required on a GST invoice?
+
Yes. A GST invoice needs a serial number that is unique and sequential. Rule 46 of the CGST Rules allows letters, numerals and the characters hyphen and slash, up to 16 characters. Hostspica Bills numbers invoices automatically with your own prefix, for example INV-0001.
Do I need a GSTIN to use this generator?
+
No. You can enter your GSTIN in company settings when you have one. The tool works for businesses with and without GST registration; without a GSTIN you can issue invoices with GST at 0%.
How does it decide between CGST + SGST and IGST?
+
It compares your company's state with the place of supply. If both are the same state, GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. If they differ, the whole tax is charged as IGST. You can change the place of supply on any invoice.
Does it generate e-invoice IRN or e-way bills?
+
No. Hostspica Bills creates GST tax invoices and quotations as PDFs. It does not generate IRN, QR codes from the e-invoice portal, or e-way bills, and it does not file GST returns.
